PEACEWARDS - Note on participants

Day by Day

“We at CfP visualize our role as that of opening and spreading out a dhurrie upon which a wide range of people, views, perspectives and vantage points can engage in open exchange and forge a shared ‘ownership’ for the common ground that thus emerges.” - A Secular Re-think, Citizens of Peace as a dhurrie.

As stated in their mandate, CfP drew on a ‘wide range of people, views, perspectives and vantage points’ to chart out a course Peacewards. The workshop brought together people from vastly different backgrounds – religious, educational, cultural, economic, professional – all with a common aim: to restore the secular and plural values of a society torn apart by strife and violence. The majority of participants were socially committed citizens who are already part of peace and empowerment initiatives. So we had members of organizations like Aman Biradari in Delhi, Odisha Shanti o Sadbhavna Abhiyaan (Orissa) and Sahajeevan, Bangalore. The workshop also included independent consultants from Mumbai, Andhra Pradesh and Bhubaneshwar.

The legal fraternity was well represented by faculty members and staff of SVKM’s Law College while the Burhani college gang kept the student quotient high. International participants working on projects in Indian cities exchanged notes with medical practitioners and Gandhian social workers. The corporate sector rose to the occasion not with numbers but with intent - participants from a bank matched social sector workers step for step, project for project. Apart from the four metros, major cities like Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Hyderabad were represented as was the idyllic state of Goa by a father-son duo.

The workshop drew socially conscious citizens across all age groups – teenagers rubbed shoulders with a septuagenarian and 40-something participants matched the energy of those half their age.

A magical mélange of languages, communities, ages, dressing styles, food habits and mental orientations, the workshop was truly a microcosm of modern India. An apt example of how diverse groups and individuals can come together beautifully and productively just by committing to a mutually beneficial cause.
